Optimising explosive efficiency with Orica's 4Dᵀᴹ technologies and decarbonisation

23 Apr 2025

When our teams embarked on developing our 4D bulk systems delivery concepts for both surface and underground mining applications, the goal was clear: expanded energy ranges, and enhanced efficiency and precision in our premium bulk explosives services through innovative process control and holistic systems thinking.

From a sustainability standpoint, 4D technologies optimise the use and application of explosives in blasting operations.

Greg Rigby, Vice President Explosives and Automation Systems

Premium explosives, with their optimised chemical energy, remain one of the most efficient methods for breaking rock. By tailoring the energy delivered to each blast, we can reduce explosives consumption while achieving equal or superior mining outcomes. This approach is particularly beneficial for our surface coal market customers, where it significantly cuts down the amount of explosives used.

Our foundation customers across various regions have witnessed these benefits firsthand. In Indonesia, for instance, where multiple coal seams and varying rock properties are common, controlled energy placement has reduced the powder factor by nearly 15 per cent in soft rock scenarios. This not only maintains digging rates but also decreases associated explosives-related carbon emissions.

When integrated with Orica Digital Solutions’, such as SHOTPlus™, Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES), and BlastIQ™, the energy delivered to metal ore blasts can be precisely tailored and results accurately measured. This improves fragmentation and throughput in downstream processing, enhancing mine productivity, reducing milling energy costs, and boosting the efficiency of excavation, haulage, and processing.

4D Sustainability

4D™ allows for adjustable energy levels within blast holes, reducing carbon emissions in soft ground through lower product usage and optimising fragmentation in hard ore for increased processing efficiency.

In underground applications, Orica's 4D™ Underground System revolutionises the explosives selection process by focusing on delivered energy rather than generalised properties like density. This system allows for adjustable energy levels within blast holes.

The implementation of 4D™ technologies in surface and underground applications significantly enhances mining efficiency in several ways:

  1. Optimised explosives use: By precisely tailoring the energy delivered to blasts, 4D™ technologies reduce the amount of explosives needed without compromising the effectiveness of the blast. This leads to reduced environmental impact and cost savings.
  2. Increased precision: The innovative process control and whole-systems thinking embedded in 4D™ technologies ensure that explosives are applied more accurately. This precision minimises waste and maximises the effectiveness of each blast.
  3. Improved operational efficiency: With better control over the blasting process, mining operations can achieve more consistent and predictable results. This reduces downtime and increases overall productivity.
  4. Sustainability benefits: By reducing explosives consumption and associated carbon emissions, 4D™ technologies contribute to more sustainable mining practices. The integration of digital solutions like SHOTPlus™, IES, and BlastIQ™ further supports lower impact mining practices by providing data-driven insights and real-time monitoring, which help in making more informed and environmentally responsible decisions.
